Recoloring Tutorial For Sims 4
This tutorial will cover:
• Recoloring CC
• Creating a Mask used in making recoloring easy
Programs Needed:
• Sims 4 Studio
• Picture Editing Program such as PhotoShop or Paintshop
* Mesh used for this tutorial is a sofa I made. It can be found in the set HERE
Getting Started:
To check recolors fast and easy, begin with a fresh, clean game.
• "cut" and "paste" your Sims 4 Mods folder, found in "My Documents>Electronic Arts>The Sims 4"
• place it in a safe place on your desktop.
• then create another folder to replace it and make sure to name it "Mods"
(without quotations, of course)
Now you have a brand new vanilla game that will take no time to load!
1. First thing we do is, any piece of CC you wish to recolor, it must be placed in the S4S Mods folder so it will appear in your S4S.
"Copy" and "Paste" the file in "My Documents>Sims 4 Studio>Mods" folder.
2. Now, open S4S
Make sure "Standalone Recolor" is ticked, then press the blue tab that says "Object"
3. In the drop down tab next to "Content" choose "custom"
4. There you will see the CC you wish to recolor.
Sometimes the preview of the CC will not show (who knows why or why not) but it is ok.
Click on it and then "Next"
5. A new window will open. This is where you name your file that will have your recolor(s).
* most creators, such as myself, do like it if you keep the name of the file the same
(as it gives credit and also makes it easy to find)
I suggest adding your name to the beginning of the file and "recolors"
(or something like that) to the end
Then click "save"
6. You will now see the sofa (or whatever CC you have chosen).
This is where the description for the CC is, under the "catalog" tab.
7. Here you may add to the description areas to give the information to those who download that you are the creator of these recolors.
8. Next, click on the "texture" tab
9. You may see that there can be many texture made by the original creator.
Click on the last recolor.
10. Click on the "Remove Swatch" button to remove all the recolors, leaving just the first one.
12. Now, what I do is, "Add Swatch" and import the "Bake" for the sofa.
* "Import" is directly under the "Export" button.
13. Click the "Export" button. Rename it "texture" instead of "Bake".
Save it as a PNG and make sure you save it in the same location you have your recolor package file
(just because it is easy to find)
14. Open your "texture" image you just saved, in Photoshop
15. Also, open the "UV Map" So we can make a "Mask".
I usually always include a "Mask" but for some reason...I forgot. But, that is ok cause I can teach you how to make one!
16. Make a new "Layer".
Go to "File>New" Since this is a 2048 X 2048, make your new layer those dimensions.
Place your "New Layer" over the "UV Map"
I change the new layer to "Multiply" so I can see the "UV Map" clearly.
17. With the Marquee Tool, outline the areas of the sofa.
In this case, I am outlining the areas of the sofa frame and bottom cushions.
18. Use the "Bucket Tool" to paint this area Red.
19. Select the other areas of the back cushions and color that area Green.
Select the area with the legs and color it Blue.
20. Add the "Mask" to your "texture" (Bake) image and choose "Overlay"
21. I like to check my "Mask" in S4S, just to be sure I have all the parts color coded correctly.
So, "Merge Visible", "Save", "Import" into S4S and check.
Looks Good!!!
22. Hide the "Mask" layer and lets add our textures!
First, lets add the wood textures for the legs.
Place the wood texture over the area for the legs and "Overlay" the texture.
23. Now add some fabric/texture to the areas for the sofa frame and bottom cushions.
Then "Overlay" the texture.
24. In the "Layers" panel on the right hand side, select the image of the "Mask".
With the "Magic Wand Tool" select the areas of the "Mask" that is all colors except for "Red" and press "Delete" (on your keyboard)
25. Choose a fabric/texture and repeat the same steps for the back cushions.
26. When you are done, click "Merge Visible" and "Save"
27. "Import" your new texture into S4S to see your recolor.
28. Under where it says "Swatch Thumbnails", right click on the box and you will see an eyedropper appear. Hover over the areas of your sofa, when you have the desired color, left click your mouse.
You may do this for up to all three of the boxes, to add color.
29. When you are ready to check your recolor(s) in game, click "Save" on the right hand bottom, then press ok in the box that appears.
"Copy" and "Paste" your file into your Mods folder. Check your recolor in game!
30. CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You have learned to recolor!
(To make more recolors, just click on the "Add Swatch" button in S4S
and repeat all the steps you just learned)
